The Hillsboro Argus
Construction should begin soon on the new fire station for Hillsboro Fire Department. The new station will be on a 6.29 acre lot at 21880 NW Cherry Lane, west of Cornelius Pass Road.
The 16,000 square foot fire station will serve as the Fire Department's new training center and will feature three engine bays, living quarters for the four-person engine company, plus classroom space for training. Completion of the facility is scheduled for the summer of 2010.
"We are excited about the new fire station and deployment of a new engine company into that area of our city," said Fire Chief Gary Seidel. "The new station is an integral step toward reducing our response time to emergencies."
The addition of the Cherry Lane fire station is part of the Fire Department's Strategic Plan to meet response time goals.
"The addition of the firefighters in this location along with their equipment will improve the safety of our community," said Mayor Jerry Willey.
Money for construction comes from the city's general fund and the local option tax provides funding for the additional firefighters, apparatus and equipment. The City Council approved the $2.8 million construction contract award to CSI Construction Company of Portland at its Nov. 17 meeting.
The new Fire Station has been designed to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification. The LEED program is an internationally recognized green building rating system providing standards for environmentally sustainable construction.
Building to this LEED standard offers many benefits. The construction process, which focuses on locally produced and locally sourced materials, will consume fewer resources and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The completed building will be energy efficient and require less electricity and water to operate while providing a healthier work and living environment for the firefighters.
Group McKenzie Inc. of Portland designed the building. Contractors are awaiting a final permit for site erosion control before beginning work.
